The map is where you spend most of your time in Wildflyer. It shows weather conditions, active incidents, and your saved locations — all in one view.
Choose a map style
Section titled “Choose a map style”Press S (or click the style button, top-right) to switch between four backgrounds:

| Outdoor | Terrain, elevation, and topography |
| Satellite | Aerial imagery of the landscape |
| Dataviz | Neutral background that makes weather data stand out |
The map automatically adjusts to your light or dark theme.
Save locations
Section titled “Save locations”To keep an eye on a location, you can save it as a monitored location:
- Search — press Cmd+K (or Ctrl+K) to search for a place by name
- Right-click the map and select Show Forecast to preview a location, then save it
Saved locations appear as pins on the map and show the current value of your selected weather variable (temperature, wind, FWI, etc.). Click any pin to see the full forecast.
Toggle map layers
Section titled “Toggle map layers”Press L (or click the layers button) to control what’s visible on the map:
- Monitored locations — your saved pins
- Weather stations — nearby observation stations
- Incidents — active fire markers
- Place labels — city and town names
- Boundaries — administrative borders
- Streets — road network overlay
Navigate the map
Section titled “Navigate the map”- Scroll to zoom, drag to pan, double-click to zoom in
- Click the compass (appears when the map is rotated) to reset north
- Click the locate button to jump to your current position
- At zoom level 10+, a 3D terrain toggle appears for a tilted topographic view
The map remembers your last position between sessions.
- Press M to jump to the map from anywhere in the app
- Use the Dataviz style when reviewing forecast data — the neutral background makes colour-coded weather layers much easier to read
- Right-click the map for quick actions: create an incident, start a prescribed burn, or check the forecast at any point
- The timeline at the bottom lets you step through forecast hours — use the ← and → arrow keys to move one step at a time, or press N to jump back to now
